A Partnership Approach to Meeting Coastal Zone Management at a Local Level

The project proposal is to realign the creek channel running along the north face of Two Tree Island in Leigh Creek, South Essex, allowing development of saltmarsh to combat loss of this UK Biodiversity Action Plan priority habitat that has declined as a result of coastal squeeze. Re-asserting the alternative channel as the dominant watercourse will prevent erosion of flood defences and exposure to contaminated landfill and provide flow to keep access to Leigh Quay moorings clear. The present siltation is threatening the historical commercial fishing industry of Leigh Old Town and the tourism that it attracts.
