A win for whinchats

Blacka Moor is an important mosaic of habitats within a relatively small area, including oak/birch upland woodland, wet woodland, heathland, wetland and grassland. Whinchat (Saxicola rubetra) is a nationally declining species that has been included in the Red List of Threatened Species
following a 50% decline in Britain and Europe since the 1990s. There is a small population on Blacka Moor which we would like to encourage.
Whinchats need open wet habitats and dry heath with sections of bracken. Birch saplings are slowly encroaching the heathland and we are proposing a series of activities to control the scrub and bring back the quality of the heathland and wetland by removing saplings and improving the infrastructure for cattle to graze new saplings.
