Conserving the Painswick Valley’s Rare Butterflies

The project will restore limestone grassland in the Painswick Valley in the Cotswolds as part of a reintroduction programme for two rare butterflies, the Large Blue and Duke of Burgundy. It will be the first step towards re-establishing functioning metapopulations of both species in the area.

Work will include i) habitat condition assessments to identify where scrub needs to be controlled and the larval food plants boosted by propagation; ii) conservation management by contractors and volunteer work parties including scrub clearance and ruderal control; iii) planting of larval foodplants (wild thyme, primulas); iv) the reintroduction and monitoring of the Large Blue and Duke of Burgundy butterflies.
