Fife Red Squirrel Project: community based red squirrel conservation

This project aims to make a significant contribution to the conservation of red squirrels in Fife, in accordance with the actions outlined in the Fife Local Biodiversity Action Plan and within the framework of the Scottish Strategy For Red Squirrel Conservation. The project will include a comprehensive programme of surveying and monitoring, habitat creation and management, grey squirrel control, awareness raising and interpretation. The elements of surveying, monitoring and awareness raising will be carried out Fife wide. Grey squirrel control in particular as well as interpretation will target the key red squirrel strongholds. All elements of the project will be delivered with the help of volunteers and in close collaboration with groups from communities throughout Fife. The project will build on experience gained and partnerships built during the site specific pilot project at Ladybank and Devilla Forests.
