Ham Common Woods, Richmond Upon Thames – Creation of Ponds

The project will improve the biodiversity value of an area of woodland at Ham Common Woods (SMINC) by creating a 3 new ponds. Currently the site only supports breeding frogs during wet springs where there is sufficient standing water in damp hollows. There is also a common toad population which has been divided by roads, grass snakes, slow worms and smooth newts. A mosaic of diverse marginal vegetation and open shallow water will greatly improve the ponds for these species.
This work meets targets in the UK Biodiversity Action Plan for ponds, London Standing Water Habitat Action Plan and the boroughs Biodiversity Action Plans.
