Open Farmyard made safe for visitors

For over 30 years, Surrey Docks Farm has run a city farm in the heart of London’s dockland, providing opportunities for city families to engage with all aspects of a working farm. The Farm’s centrepiece is its open farmyard where the public enjoy having contact with farm animals, mixing and mingling with them, feeding and stroking them.

The project addresses a number of issues raised by the Farm’s local Environmental Health Department to ensure the fullest control over the risk of infection from E. Coli and other micro-organisms while retaining the ability and opportunity for the public to mingle and have contact with animals. The project involves entirley digging out, re-configuring and re-surfacing the farmyard, including new drainage; erecting new guard rails through the middle of the farmyard and around its perimeter and providing comprehensive interpretive, health & safety and directional signage throughout the farm.
