Packing Shed Trust

The Packing Shed was built in about 1895 by the Tollesbury & Mersea Oyster Fishery Company Ltd and it is believed to be the only one of its kind that still exists. The shed is situated on Packing Marsh Island, just off the coast of Mersea Island, and is accessible by boat.
Over the years the Shed has suffered greatly from severe storms but has always been restored. After much hard work the Shed was opened in 1992 for the benefit of the local community. It can be hired for functions From Easter to the end of September and is opened 5 times per year for open days.
In 2008, two bunds were constructed which help prevent the soil base of the Packing Marsh Island from being washed away. The project proved to be very successful; however, the water flow down Little Ditch from Abbotts Hall Farm, is beginning to undermine the southern bund which now requires strengthening. The project will reinforce the southern bund using harecore dredged up by Maldon District Council.
