River Rother restoration

This stretch of the River Rother at Woodhouse Washlands was artificially straightened and over-widened in the 1950s to create a flood alleviation scheme. This has resulted in poor habitat diversity and a lack of connectivity to the adjacent floodplain.
The objectives of this project are to improve the river habitats to enhance Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) priority species populations, enhance fish populations and improve the river habitats to meet the required Water Framework Directive (WFD).
In addition, it will benefit the physical and ecological conditions in the river by improving in-channel and riparian habitat
features.
