Projects / Sand Martin Bank Eel Pie Island

Sand Martin Bank Eel Pie Island

To construct a sand martin bank at a small nature reserve on Eel Pie Island, to provide nesting opportunities for up to 80 pairs of sand martins. The site lies on the main sand martin migratory route and has been selected in consultation with the RSPB and other partners in regional Species Action Plan as the most appropriate site for a nesting bank. The structure will also incorporate a bat roost into the roof of the structure

Construction work would be carried out by a specialist contractor, with assistance from local volunteers in getting materials to the site (the only access to the site is via a private garden, through narrow paths so materials will need to be carried by hand) A group of local volunteers will assist with ongoing monitoring and maintenance of the structure.
