Small Blue Butterfly Project

This project will provide practical habitat enhancement in Moray to benefit the small blue butterfly, a UK Biodiversity Action Plan species and other native butterflies. Our project will take place within the Moray Firth Special Area of Conservation (SAC) including Findhorn Bay and Culbin Bay. The area is a SSSI site, Special Protection Area and a Ramsar site. Children and young people will take part in hands-on conservation work to plant a range of native wildflowers, particularly kidney vetch which is the sole laval food source for the small blue. Wildflower seed will be sown in suitable locations, on bare soil and small scrapes created by the children. Where appropriate, plug plants will be planted and carefully protected from damage by animals.
