St Mary’s Churchyard, Leyton – enhancing churchyard biodiversity and making it more welcoming to visitors

The project will clear the churchyard’s meadow area to enhance biodiversity and will add a path around it for user. A bog area will be created with native plants, and native hedging and bulbs will be planted. Bird and bat boxes will be erected, and log piles will be added. New benches will also be provided for visitors. A project run in conjunction with a local school will map the churchyards gravestones and create a ‘living’ plant sculpture to provide an additional habitat area at the churhyard.

The project is being funded 50% by Grantscape and 50% by Church Urban Fund through an innovative joint programme.
