120th Anniversary Works

Belfast Cathedral (BC) is a cultural venue and tourist attraction in Belfast city centre. 2024 marks the Cathedral’s 120th year of hosting historic events and congregational activities.

Surveying work has established that if the roof and gullies are not cleared within 12 months there is a danger that the entire roof and gully system will require major work. Additionally, by repairing the heaters in the nave, the intruder alarm an main door lift access, the site will be safe, easily accessible and warm for users, and the work will protect invaluable archives.

The building offers a main nave with 700 seats, a multi-purpose hall that seats 75 people and a kitchen. Weekly use includes daily lunchtime services, healing and evensong and two main services on a Sunday. As a civic space it is also open to the public 10am-4pm daily, the site also receives an average of 20 weekly tourist tours, individuals and some school groups.

The site is home to records and archives invaluable to historians and researchers. Income is generated through congregational giving, car parking and venue hire, but it is not enough to maintain the building; the Cathedral does not benefit from any statutory funding from either Belfast City Council or the Northern Ireland Office.
