A New Welcome to the Visitors at Highgate Common

This is a project to create a new path, update interpretation boards and a trail at Highgate Common in Staffordshire. The common is a rare lowland heathland and a haven for wildlife. It offers a peaceful green space to explore. This project will enhance the visitor experience with a new path linking the main car park to the public toilets, updated interpretation boards, and a refreshed minibeast trail for young nature lovers. Habitat creation will also support solitary bees and wasps. The improvements will bring a fresh look while helping protect the site’s unique biodiversity. Highgate will remain both a special place for wildlife and a welcoming space for people.

The common is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest, recognised for its rare heathland habitat that supports a unique population of solitary bees and wasps. Located on the outskirts of the Wolverhampton, Dudley, and Stourbridge conurbation, the site is a valued green space for residents who use it for outdoor recreation.

A key element is the creation of a new path connecting the community building and public toilets with the wider common. Currently, visitors use an informal desire line that is gradually damaging sensitive habitat. The new path will guide foot traffic along a designated route, helping to protect the environment, while improving accessibility and promoting responsible behaviour in this ecologically sensitive area. It will enable people with limited mobility, or those with pushchairs, to access facilities without needing to drive around the site due to the current steep and uneven terrain.
