Access Improvements and Woodland Management at Carstramon Wood

Carstramon Wood is the largest of the Fleet Valley Oak Woodlands. It is a SSSI and a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) for old sessile oak woodland. The reserve, owned by Scottish Wildlife Trust, is open to the general public and has several walks available. In spring, the reserve provides a spectacular display of bluebells and features in a number of national publications. Consequently, the reserve attracts visitors from a wide area. The project aims to undertake a variety of improvement tasks including bridge and step construction, resurfacing and / or reconstruction of stretches of footpath, some drainage work, and strimming the footpath to ease access. Woodland management will include mapping and subsequent control of beech seedlings and non- native trees, removing hazardous branches to improve safety, and some bracken control.
