Accessible Highfield – Path Resurfacing

This project is to resurface a path within a popular section of Highfield Park, and to purchase a wheelchair accessible picnic bench (4 seats and space for 2 wheelchairs), for users of the path.

The path to be resurfaced is particularly important, as it is used daily by the local pre-school nursery children and residents of Crosby Close Care Home, a charity that supports adults with profound & multiple learning disabilities. In its current uneven condition, the path is difficult to navigate for wheelchair users and anyone who has limited mobility. This is one of the most accessible areas of the park for both groups (and many other users), but is now a potential risk to anyone for whom a smooth surface is essential.

Highfield Park was created on the former grounds of two mental hospitals which were closed in the 1990s. Most of the land was sold for housing but 82 acres were set aside for local people to enjoy. It’s a much-loved park, frequented by people enjoying the great outdoors and the health benefits that this provides. Being a diverse park, there is something for everyone – from people walking their dogs or jogging round the paths, to families enjoying a picnic or following our tree trail. It is home to several groups including an early morning bootcamp, St Albans City and District Youth Football Club, the local U3A Petanque Club and an archery group. Due to financial constraints the resurfacing is long overdue, so this project will generate a lot of positivity and goodwill in the area.
