Acquisition and management of an area of woodland, scrub and grassland adjacent to Lower Woods SSSI Nature Reserve

The Lagger is an area of woodland, scrub and grassland adjacent to Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust’s (GWT) Lower Woods SSSI Nature Reserve and close to the Bishops Hill Wood SSSI. GWT has the opportunity to purchase this piece of land which would provide an important buffer to Lower Woods and stepping stone between the SSSIs.
When the land is purchased, GWT plans to: restore an area of historic grassland which has scrubbed over; implement scrub rotation to preserve habitat for songbirds e.g. bullfinch; implement light thinning to encourage the scrub layer in an area of ancient woodland; clearfell conifers in a 0.5 acre area and restore to native ancient woodland species mix through natural regeneration.
