Allithwaite Village Quarry Environmental Enhancement Project

Allithwaite and Cartmel Parish Council (PC) is proud of its “green” credentials and feel that community involvement in projects promotes ownership and sustainability. The next major PC led project is to work alongside volunteers and experts in converting an old quarry into a wildlife area, which is already a SSSI as a haven for rare butterfly species.
The PC commissioned ecological study of the quarry resulted in a 10 year plan to ensure this project is undertaken in a sustainable manner to offset carbon emissions whilst safeguarding established flora and fauna.
This project is Phase 1 of works, which is to ensure the security of the boundary and quarry face areas by fencing these areas to an industrial standard and which needs to be completed before public access can be allowed (for health and safety reasons due to the site being a former quarry as identified in the project risk assessment).
