Alrewas Island Riverbank Restoration

Alrewas Island, restored for public access in 2020, has become a focal point for local people who have come together to help make the island a lovely place, creating areas such as a wildlife pond, forest school and camp dens, and to provide activities such as willow weaving. This project is to protect areas along the riverbank that are threatened by its erosion from the River Trent. Erosion threatens the natural habitat of wildlife living along the riverbank and, in time, would result in a significant portion of the island being washed away. The project will prevent this by depositing rocks (Derbyshire stone) along the edge of the riverbank, using the same traditional method as was used by the Rivers Authority (as it was then – no authority now carries out this function) 40 – 50 years ago.
