Archbishops Palace Garden Restoration

The Archbishops Garden is an enclosed garden on the southern side of the Archbishops Palace on the East bank of the River Medway. The Archbishops Palace was one of a series of Palaces on the journey from Canterbury to London for the clergy from medieval times. The garden now looks tired and more vigorous plants have taken over and the soil has become depleted. The large yew needs major tree surgery. It is proposed that the garden be refurbished to a more typical garden that will contain food plants as well as medicinal plants and flowers of around 1530, before the dissolution of the monasteries. This will greatly increase its attraction to the general public in the centre of Maidstone and for wedding parties from the Registry Office in the Palace. Trained fruit trees will add interest to the garden and reflect the tradition of fruit growing in Kent. KGT will supervise the work and it will form the basis of a public education programme with boards on site and information online. KGT will maintain the garden.
