Projects / Astley Moss Scrub Clearance

Astley Moss Scrub Clearance

The project is designed to continue the restoration of Astley Moss an area of lowland raised bog. One of the main issues is that the site is prone to the invasion of Birch and this encroaching on to the priority bog habitat. By clearing these areas of scrub it will allow us to reintroduce bog plants. Invading scrub is currently drying out the bog habitat, this makes it very difficult to achieve the optimal water levels required. The mossland vegetation in this area has been removed during peat extraction so natural colonisation would be difficult so reintroduction of these plants is crucial.
