Axwell Park Otter Project

The A694 near Axwell Park is a major otter mortality blackspot due to animals travelling between the River Derwent and Axwell Park Lake. Gateshead Council with support from the Durham Biodiversity Partnership, Northumbrian Water Limited and Natural England are planning a series of capital works in the area with the aim of reducing accidents. These include the construction of an otter underpass and the use of fencing to steer otters away from areas of traffic.
