Back to Chalk

This project aims to take chalk grassland restoration to the next level on 4 key sites in Croydon and Bromley. Following the clearance of mature scrub from the sites in 2010-11, we now seek to create more favourable conditions for the development of chalk grassland flora by removing a layer of topsoil, together with scrub roots. This will be accompanied by the management of surrounding grassland to ensure good quality seed bank that will re-colonise the scraped areas, including weed wiping on some sites and scrub clearance on others. The project will involve local people enabling them to learn new habitat management, surveying and monitoring skills, whilst the impact of the work will be monitored using standardised vegetation and reptile monitoring methods.
