Balcaskie Park Estate Water Voles Project

The Water Vole is the most rapidly declining mammal in the UK. As a priority Fife LBAP species, the main threats to water voles are habitat loss and predation by mink.
This project involves habitat creation between known populations, and intends to create linkages to allow for population expansion. The work will reinstate a burn habitat with suitable vegetation, creating a habitat corridor between isolated vole colonies and allowing them to increase their range and genetic diversity.
The trapping and elimination of mink will continue in the area to reduce predation pressure to water vole populations.
