Baron’s Haugh Fen Habitat Improvement

The project will enhance the conservation value of 3.5 hectares of UKBAP Lowland Fen habitat on RSPB Baron’s Haugh nature reserve through the introduction of a grazing regime. This is based on organisational knowledge (underpinned by scientific research) of best-practice wetland management, which prescribes the use of cattle. Approximately 400 m of fencing will be installed by contractors to compartmentalise a 3.5 ha area of the reserve. This will allow cattle to be introduced on to the site to graze the wetland vegetation out with the breeding season, and provide a sustainable way in which to maintain the vegetation at an optimum level for breeding wading birds.
