Bats at Charnwood Lodge National Nature Reserve

Charnwood Lodge is important for bats; both species of pipistrelle and the rare Natterer’s breed here, and brown long-eared and noctule are also recorded. The project will involve the following:
Repairs to outbuildings to preserve and enhance important bat roosts
Install heaters in the main bat roost – research has shown that heaters in bat roost improves the breeding success of the bats using the roost
Put up more bat boxes – two Leisler bats were recently found in a bat box on the reserve. Leisler bats are very rare and this was an important find. Therefore, further bat boxes woul be erected around the reserve to encourage this and other species.
Radio tracking of bats – this would enable us to build up a much better picture of how the bats use the reserve and might enable us to find out where their winter roost site
