Beamish, the North of England Open Air Museum

The Colliery area forms one of the principal attractions . It was one of the earliest relocations to the site and has suffered from under-investment over recent years. A project to recreate a Colliery Lamp Cabin, built using period materials and techniques will provide an important period exhibit on completion. The museum is looking to build a replica building to house its collection of valuable miners’ lamps and other equipment like fire and rescue equipment, which is the largest collection in the country. The building will be representative of the late 19th century. In addition to the ‘staged’ area, there will also be space for educational activities, scientific experiments, display cases and graphic panels, all showing ‘a day in the life of’ a miner. In addition , the remaining buildings within the area will allow for disability access which is currently lacking. Finally, an area outside the mine will be constructed to give the visitors cover whilst queuing.
