Bernard Oakley Memorial Gardens Play Area Project, The Friends of Bernard Oakley Memorial Gardens, West Midlands/Dudley MBC

The objective of this project is to enhance the play facilities at Bernard Oakley Memorial Gardens, particularly for junior-age children. The existing play area provides limited play value, as much of the equipment has reached the end of its economic life and is no longer fit for purpose. This project aims to refurbish and improve the play area, ensuring it is more inclusive, durable, and capable of meeting the needs of the local community.

As part of the refurbishment, a range of Trim Trail equipment will be installed, offering opportunities for older children and adults to engage in physical activity. This type of equipment is specifically designed to support the development of coordination skills in children, while also encouraging active play for all age groups.

The project seeks to enhance and expand provisions for toddlers and primary-aged children by creating an inclusive, stimulating, and challenging play environment suitable for children of all abilities. The play area will be designed to be visually appealing and to provide a safe and engaging space for children and their carers.

The improved facilities will serve the local community, particularly children within a 15-minute walking distance of the play area. The space will be accessible throughout the year and will incorporate features to ensure usability by individuals with disabilities.

Environmental considerations: The play equipment will be primarily constructed from recycled materials, ensuring sustainability in its production. Additionally, the contractor will implement protective matting during construction to minimise ground disturbance and preserve the surrounding environment.

Hard to reach considerations: The park is actively used by individuals of all ethnic backgrounds, age groups, and abilities within the community. The addition of the new facility will further enhance its accessibility and appeal. The COVID-19 lockdown introduced many new visitors to the park, many of whom have continued to use the space regularly. Local ward councillors, who are members of the project group, maintain strong connections with respected community leaders, ensuring ongoing engagement with diverse representative groups. Following the development of the play area, a series of community events will be organised to encourage wider participation and foster greater community involvement.
