Bethnal Green Nature Reserve, London – Toilet and Improvements (006114)

Bethnal Green Nature Reserve (BGNR) began as a WW2 bomb-site in 1942, and has since been protected by a group of local residents on a voluntary basis. It is now a rare and remarkable piece of wilderness, a medicinal garden, and a place of natural and cultural heritage.

This project introduces composting systems to the site including a 3 bay system for green waste and a much needed accessible compost toilet.

A key aim is to improve the nature reserve’s soil quality, through producing a range of composts which can be applied across the site. The proposed composting area is designed to provide an attractive, innovative and accessible facility to engage and educate visitors and volunteers about the benefits of composting and recycling. Through the public facing nature of this project (volunteer opportunities, talks, education and training for local residents) it is hoped these methods can be replicated in neighbouring community gardens, and nature reserves.
