Biological Control of Himalayan balsam at Flatts Lane Woodland Country Park

To release a rust fungus (approved by DEFRA) with CABI Europe which has shown positive results in stunting highly invasive plant species Himalayan balsam amongst 47 sites across the UK to date. The fungus draws nutrients away from the plant, limiting its growth and ability to produce seeds. It was found to significantly increase seedling mortality, either directly or by secondary pathogen infection.

• This will help prevent the spread of balsam to more of the site, and beyond to Eston Hills, nearby housing estates and watercourses that flow out of the site.

• Proactive measures will reduce the strain on resources for staff and volunteers, enabling time to be spent on other conservation/ management tasks.
