Blacka Moor nature reserve – habitat improvement

To improve the ancient semi-natural woodland habitat at Blacka Moor to benefit migrant birds, particularly red-listed species such as pied flycatcher, spotted flycatcher and redstart. All of these species have bred in low numbers on Blacka in the past two years and the habitat management aims to increase the size and range of the breeding population.
Thinning understorey trees and scalloping woodland edges will create open glade conditions which these birds need. Removal of non-native rhododendron and sycamore will allow the native oak-birch woodland to regenerate.
