Projects / Bramley Bank Pond Restoration

Bramley Bank Pond Restoration

This project aims to restore the pond at the Bramley Bank Nature Reserve, in South Croydon. The pond has been neglected over the years and there is a need for considerable restoration work. This large area (80m²) of still water is situated in a woodland habitat composed mostly of oak and ash woodland. This project aims to extend the wetland margin around the pond, increasing opportunities for marginal vegetation to establish. Furthermore, we propose to de-silt and survey the pond, a task that has not been undertaken since 1980s, using volunteer working groups.

This project will contribute towards the London regional BAP targets for 2020 that seek to enhance 20 standing water sites that are less than 2ha. Furthermore, in the past the pond was known to support native amphibian species including the Great Crested Newt, a BAP species. Restoring this pond for Great Crested Newts would contribute towards target 3 of the Pond Habitats Action Plan to restore pond sites to deliver priority species targets.
