Bridging Beetley and Hoe Rough

Norfolk Wildlife Trust has owned Hoe Rough nature reserve since 1989, and recently purchased adjoining Beetley meadows. Beetley and Hoe meadows are designated as a SSSI and are separated by rare chalk stream habitat. The project will increase ecological connectivity along this river valley and provide major benefits for priority species native black poplar, brown trout and adder, and near threatened green-winged orchid, through integrated management and restoration across a rich mosaic of lowland meadow and pasture, grassland, chalk stream, fen marsh and swamp, and lowland heathland habitats. It will plant native black poplar and undertake river works to restore gravel beds. It will join the two sites via a cattle/foot bridge and install grazing infrastructure on Beetley meadow, allowing combined efficient grazing management. It will revitalise and expand habitat for green-winged orchid and adder. Connecting the two sites will also establish a new circular walk for local residents and visitors.
