Brixton People’s Kitchen, London – Creating a Community Hub and Cafe (007971)

The organisation are retrofitting a disused shop into a Community Hub and cafe works include refurbishment installing a kitchen and toilets. The area has no shops and only fast food establishments. The hub will also be a warm space, training space and a space for the local community to meet. The organisation will also offer volunteering opportunities and support local people, especially those out of work, to share their knowledge and skills through community workshops as well as delivering learning sessions on sustainable lifestyles (wasting less and growing more) and will run a regular community meal made from surplus food. The hub will also offer locally grown and surplus fruit and veg to encourage local people, especially children, to try new foods and eat and cook healthy affordable meals. This will reduce the communities impact on the environment by reducing travel journeys to shops and food waste.
