Brown’s Folly Biodiversity Project

Brown’s Folly is a 40 ha reserve comprising rare calcareous grassland, woodland and a cave network. The site hosts 36 UK BAP priority species, including five bat species.

The grassland is at high risk of being lost to encroaching scrub and woodland. Unsuitable public use of the site, including camping, lighting fires, parties and drug-taking, has made it difficult to find a grazier.

The project will prepare the site for grazing, protect and extend the grassland, install access measures, protect cave entrances and monitor biodiversity. Non-landfill tax funding will be sought for a concurrent community engagement/education project for the site.
