Burscough Towpath Enhancments

This project will enhance a 1.6km section of towpath on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal in Burscough, West Lancashire.
The towpath is currently constructed of condensed earth, and remains in its traditional form as when the canal was first opened over 200 years ago. The towpath is narrow, uneven, and is not suitable for access on a year round basis, particularly in the winter months. Upon completion, the towpath will be 2m wide, and of the highest standard, providing a works specification that is hard wearing, weather resistant, and low maintenance. This will guarantee year round, safe usage for pedestrians, cyclists, and other users. The towpath will also be suitable for wheelchair use, which it is currently not. The project will transform the towpath into a high quality leisure and utility route, offering a safe alternative to roads.
