Burton & Chingford Nature Reserve habitat & nature trail improvement

Burton & Chingford Ponds Nature Reserve is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and hosts a fantastic array of habitats including ponds, bogs, heathland and woodland with a nature trail winding through enabling an estimated 20,000 visitors to enjoy the wildlife each year. We plan to restore the board walk, clear the nature trail and deliver habitat improvements at Burton and Chingford Ponds Nature Reserve.

Our volunteers have been trying to patch up the board walk that crosses Black Hole bog in recent years but it is subsiding and desperately needs to be replaced. We also plan to clear paths that connect the rest of the nature trail and deliver habitat improvements to recreate open water in Black Hole bog, create scrapes on the Welch’s Common part of the nature reserve and clear trees, scrub, bracken and rhododendron to restore heathland habitat (Priority BAP habitat).
