Bury MBC – Community Hanging Basket Scheme

This proposed community inititative for ‘in-bloom’ 2005 is a community led hanging basket scheme to be set up on the main gateway into Bury town centre. The project will encourage local residents, in an area which has high deprivation levels, to get involved in the Britain in Bloom competition by offering them a free, robust hanging basket to display and maintain at the front of their property. A community planting day will be organised for the residents and children to choose their plants and design their own hanging basket, which the council will then hang for them. The council will make certain that each resident or commercial property agrees to maintain the basket for the next five years. The project will give local people the opportunity to take park in a high profiled initiative giving them a greater sense of pride in their neighbourhood, where many of the houses do not have gardens.
