Cambridge University Botanic Garden

The Garden is situated in one of the fastest developing areas of Cambridge and, as the popularity of the Garden has grown, and the population of the neighbourhood increases, the Station Road entrance has become the “main” entry point for over half of our annual 370,000+ visitors. The current Station Road ticket office is a garden shed which is inadequate for receiving visitors, being too small and without any facilities.
The new building will accommodate better entrance and ticketing facilities, toilet facilities which are accessible for all visitors, a shop, improved information about the Garden and new landscaping around the building. The LCF funding will cover the installation of the toilet facilities, including connections to water and wastewater infrastructure.
The new Visitor Welcome Centre will enable us to further develop our Community Strategy, which has seen us partner with local organisations supporting people from disadvantaged groups, and a busy schools programme, including a travel bursary fund to enable visits from schools that would not otherwise be able to afford to visit. Participating community groups receive up to 12 free visits annually and can take advantage of specialised workshops and guided tours. The new building will also benefit those who live and work near that entrance to the Garden. As well as creating a pleasant and interesting way to enter the Garden for the majority of visitors, it will offer toilets at that entrance, which will be beneficial to all visitors.
