Carr House Meadows restoration

Old English-style meadows like these at Carr House Meadows were once a common sight across the country, but now they are no longer. Changes in farming practices mean that this type of landscape - small wildflower-rich fields bounded by thick species-rich hedgerows or heritage drystone walls, has become a rarity. At Carr House Meadows we have a group of 14 small meadows which have mostly escaped being updated and which require a little work to restore them fully to their traditional appearance and high biodiversity value - fields rich in a diverse carpet of wild flowers, abundant with insects and invertebrates supporting a dense population of songbirds. Ancient/species rich hedgerows, lowland and upland meadows, lowland dry acid grassland and rush pasture are all national and local BAP habitats and exist here in a compact 16 hectare package in a beautiful setting. We would like to restore Carr House Meadows to their traditional state to increase the site's biodiversity value.
