Celebrating Our Woodland Heritage (Hardcastle Crags, South Pennines)

The locally-distinct ancient oak clough woodlands of the South Pennines are fragmented and scarce, but are a key social and historical asset. Despite their significance, they remain under-recorded, under-appreciated and as a result under-protected. This project will celebrate this ‘hidden’ heritage and create a better sense o place, using the compelling story of three woodlands as the backdrop for more active engagement in the natural environment. This is one of three identical interpretation trails, strategically-located and punctuated by bespoke, environmentally-sensitive artworks reflecting the story of the woods, which will reach out to new audiences and engage (new) visitors to the woodlands.
