Projects / Centenary Riverside: Ponds for Pillwort

Centenary Riverside: Ponds for Pillwort

This project will create a complex of small and medium-sized ponds and linking wetland habitat, designed specifically to benefit a number of Biodiversity Action Plan priority species (including pillwort, watervole and great crested newt). Some will be permanent ponds and some seasonal, and they will have a variety of profiles, depths and marginal characteristics. The complex will form part of a wider urban nature park being developed on the site for the use of local people as a recreational, educational and community resource, as well as a place that makes a significant contribution to the Rotherham Local Biodiversity Action Plan and a number of regional and National Plans. This new Urban Wetland Nature Park will be created on a4.5 ha former industrial site adjacent to the River Don, in central Rotherham and will incorporate specific features for a number of other priority habitats and species.
