Chances Park Biodiversity

Chances Park is used by many thousands of people each year for social and recreational purposes. It is valued for its historical interest, natural habitats and for the vibrant community centre with 30,000+ users each year, based in Morton Manor built in 1807. Extensive planting of trees continued until around 1850, with later additions, which have become habitats for birds, bats and squirrels.
The project will re-establish a specie rich meadow within the historic landscape of the park. Extensive areas of medieval ridge and furrow indicate a history of non-intervention by ploughing which has resulted in a rich sward of cyanosurus cristata centurea. Over 22 specie are present. We aim to help arrest depletion of lowland meadows and develop historic specie rich grassland communities and raise the invertebrate population. There will also be extensive flower planting, additional bird and bat boxes.
