Christ Church, Isle of Dogs – Lighting Project

Since 2005, Christ Church has regularly been advised to improve its wiring. Some repairs have been made but PVC/PVC cables remain in many places and these are considered unsafe. Others are unprotected. While the rewiring is primarily required for safety reasons and to comply with current legislation, the new LED lighting system is intended to be more effective, more efficient and more environmentally friendly. Because energy is expended on providing light rather than wasted in producing heat, the lamps last longer and their greater initial cost can be amortised over twenty or thirty years or even longer. American studies have shown that manufacturing and packaging costs are higher than for incandescent bulbs but this is more than offset by the efficiency of LEDs. These studies also showed that improvements in the production of LEDs will reduce the amount of aluminium entering landfill sites.
