Clearly for Bitterns

Leighton Moss, the proposed project site, has the largest reedbed in north west England and is very important for bittern conservation. The numbers of breeding bittern at Leighton Moss have recently fallen. The project proposes to remove the silt from the reedbeds at Leighton Moss to create far better habitat for waterplants, fish and therefore bittern, leading to an increase in numbers.
