Clearwell Recreation Ground Inclusivity, Play and Wellbeing Project, Newland Parish Council, Clearwell, Glos

The Clearwell Recreation Ground Inclusivity, Play and Wellbeing Project will replace unsafe, deteriorating equipment with new, inclusive, and sustainable play structures.

Designed through community consultation with over 100 residents, including a focus group of 10 children with disabilities and a local SEN teacher, the project reflects local priorities for safety, accessibility, and fun. The new equipment will be made from recycled, durable materials and complemented by native planting and plans for a future wildlife nature trail. The project aims to provide a safe, inclusive play space that strengthens community connections and enhances the local environment.

This project will directly benefit around 1100 residents of Newland Parish, along with families, children, and visitors from neighbouring villages. In line with the parish development plan, it will replace unsafe, outdated playground equipment with modern, inclusive play structures, creating a safe and engaging space for children of all abilities. The upgraded equipment and wellbeing trail will encourage outdoor activity, reduce isolation, and support community events, making the recreation ground a valued destination for families from Clearwell, Coleford and beyond. The design reflects the real needs and aspirations of local residents.
Environmental considerations: The new equipment will be made from recycled and sustainably sourced materials, with safety surfacing and fittings chosen for durability and low maintenance. Old materials will be responsibly recycled or repurposed. The planting of trees, native shrubs and edible wildflowers has already been initiated by local residents and will enhance local biodiversity. A wildlife nature trail is included in the committee’s longer-term plans for the park, further promoting environmental learning and engagement with nature for local families and schools. This recreation ground is a designated site in the Newland Parish Council Biodiversity Action Plan and will be protected and maintained under these plan goals.

Hard to reach considerations: The project actively involves and supports children with disabilities, mental health needs, and their families - groups often underrepresented in community recreation. Partnership work with a local school led to a focus group of children with disabilities and mental health conditions, supported by a SEN teacher, who helped shape the playground design to promote sensory play, emotional wellbeing, and accessibility, including level park access. New low-impact exercise equipment has already attracted a wider range of users, including older residents. The council engaged with local people through partnerships with community organisations, an online survey and an in-person consultation attended by more than 60 people, ensuring diverse voices shaped the project.
