Cockshut Stream Project

The Cockshut Stream rises from springs near Kingston (Lewes) and flows north-east for 3km along the edge of Lewes. The stream has historically been placed in a channel and moved over time. This has had a negative impact on the ecological function of the channel and its associated floodplain, limiting natural processes and undermining the SSSI status of the area. To the south and southeast of the channel lies Lewes Brooks Nature Reserve which is managed by the RSPB and contains a network of grazing marsh and drainage ditches.
The project will see the stream taken out of its channel as it passes through Lewes Brooks SSSI to create a new 6.4 ha wetland habitat on Charity Commission land managed by Lewes District Council and RLWT. We will create a high-quality, accessible, and ecologically rich environment which supports a diverse range of wildlife species. Improved aesthetics, landscape connectivity and opportunities to connect with nature will inspire individuals and communities.
