Coetir Castell Aberlleiniog

The 15 hectare site (owned by Menter Môn) comprises a mixture of wet and dry broad-leaved ancient semi-natural woodland, wet meadow, hedgerow, 3 ponds, part of the Afon Lleiniog and c. 6 ha of newly planted broad-leaved woodland. Anglesey is presently one of the least wooded counties in the UK. The Coetir Castell Aberlleiniog project aims, within the context of the Anglesey Tree, Hedgerow & Woodland Strategy, to manage the existing woodland and increase broad-leaved woodland cover through the management of a recently planted area. The woodland surrounds Castell Aberlleiniog, a Scheduled Ancient Monument (Norman castle). Management will include ecological survey, tree management and planting, hedgerow thinning & coppicing, scrub control, control of non-native species (Himalayan balsam), pond clearance, river maintenance, provision of public access and natural history interpretation. The woodland will link with and is proposed to become a part of the nearby Llangoed Commons Local Nature Reserve.
