Projects / Colliery Winding House New Visitor Access & Interpretation Improvement

Colliery Winding House New Visitor Access & Interpretation Improvement

1. A better conserved building with up to date (and low energy) lighting and more
effective, efficient heating to ensure the building and its unique contents remain in good
condition for future generations to visit.
2. To be able to open the historic winding house to the public on a daily basis for the first
time in its history so that they can learn about its unique history and essential role in the
everyday workings of the colliery.
3. To have a full access audit on the building and proposed new interpretation we are
putting in so that we know all our visitors are included in the work that we do.
4. To install new, accessible interpretation centred on the history of the winding house
itself as well unique items from our collections on mine rescue and health and safety.
This will be text and tactile boards as well as an LED screen showing the winder in
action at ground floor level.
