Projects / Community Biomass Zone

Community Biomass Zone

Ffarm Moelyci has been Wales’ largest community owned farm; 390 acres with the majority designtaed as SSSI. Residing on the edge of Snowdonia, just 2 miles from the city of Bangor and near the the junction of the A5 & A55 it is open and accessible to a large population of locals and visitors alike, with access encouraged year round.

This project builds on previous work in community composting by constructing a Community Biomass Zone that has dual benefits. It allows the wider community of the area to get engaged in managing their environmental resources (Obj D), owning and understanding (through training and volunteering) how land is managed and biomass resources sustainable harevested.

As importantly it enables the newly designated lower farm SSSI as well as the extensive mountain SSSI to be better managed (Obj DA) as both marginal biomasses (such as bracken and soft rush etc.) need to be cut and collected to allow crticial species (such as the waxcap mushrooms) to recover and thrive.
