Conservation Action Days to Young People and Adults in Moray

Expansion of our conservation action work to improve the woodland habitat of red squirrel in Moray. We aim to engage disadvantaged young people and adults from Moray in positive conservation action to improve habitat and to take part in monitoring red squirrel populations. The practical habitat management work carried out by participants will enhance food sources, which are favoured by red squirrel and are less attractive to grey squirrel. They will plant a range of small seeded native trees and flowering/berried shrubs, which can provide a year-round food source. They will also help to expand dead-wood habitat, as fungi can be an alternative food source for red squirrel. Non-native species will be removed to increase natural regeneration of native ground floor flora and expand woodland under-storey, which is also recommended habitat management for red squirrel.
